Antony and the Johnsons,
joined by ground-breaking film director and
video artist Charles Atlas, journey through an exotic terrain of innocence,
metamorphosis and androgyny by way of an elegantly stylized blend of
music, projected imagery, and live performance.
Antony, whose vocal
stylings have been compared to the likes of
Nina Simone and Lotte Lenya, will be accompanied by the Johnsons
-- string trio, piano, bass and drums - whose performance of Antony's
highly dramatic and lyrical music unfolds before Atlas' intimate and hypnotic
portraits of thirteen Beauties slowly turning onstage while their images
are captured and projected onscreen.
Known for his award-winning
collaborations with such pioneers as
Merce Cunningham, Michael Clark, Leigh Bowery, and John Kelly,
Charles Atlas' most recent series of live video portraits entitled
"Instant Fame," was presented at Participant Inc. Gallery in 2003.
Antony is a featured
artist in the 2004 Whitney Museum's 2004
Biennial Exhibition Antony and the Johnsons new album,
"I am a Bird Now," is scheduled for release in August 2004.
